The problems that face the owners of the confiscated and nationalized
properties in former communist countries were debated in US congress over
the last two years.Debate in the Senate
and debate in the House of Representatives
resulted in the House of Representatives
Resolution 562 on October 13,1998. in which is a reflection of
the strong support of the for the plight of the owners of confiscated property
in the former communist countries. A Senate
Concurrent Resolution 19 was also passed on April 9, 1997 along the
same lines.
These resolutions are evidence of the strong support of the American
people for property restitution in the former communist countries.
US Administration Officials Speeches Related to Property
Restitution
Under Secretary of State Stuart Eizenstat was appointed State Department's
Special Envoy on Property Restitution in Central and Eastern Europe in
1995. On August 6 1998 he testified before the House International
Committee on
property restitution to victims of Holocaust in Central and Eastern Europe
. The testimony goes beyond the Holocaust victims and details the the way
in which his office and the US State Department are cooperating with and
urging other governments to make fair and just restitution of property,
including that confiscated by communist regimes in many East European countries.
